Slip of the Tongue is a theatre company based in Hamilton, New Zealand. From Shakespeare to children's shows, we have produced quality theatre within Hamilton, the Waikato region and other surrounding areas since the mid 80's.

For over a decade Slip of the Tongue have performed a string of Outdoor Summer Shakespeares. This began in the summer of 1989 with a season of The Tempest on the banks of the Waikato river. Due to the overwhelming success of this production Slip of the Tongue then presented A Midsummer Night's Dream using the same venue. Since these initial productions the group has performed nearly every summer, delighting audiences from Hamilton, Tauranga, Whakatane and Waikato satellite towns with the magic of 'Outdoor Shakespeare'.

More recently Slip of the Tongue has ventured into winter territory - providing Hamilton audiences with their unique productions of Shakespeare's Historic and Tragic plays.

The key members of the company have been involved in a diverse range of performance, from political street theatre to children's pantomime. Members of Slip of the Tongue in association with Electra Theatre Company, presented plays by Howard Brenton, Jean Paul Sartre, Jean Betts and Dylan Thomas among many others.

Slip of the Tongue consists of an experienced group of actors who have worked together since the mid 80's - focussing on interpreting Shakespeare in an accessible and captivating way, and exploring the scope of outdoor and indoor performance.

Slip of the Tongue productions also operate as a training ground for young actors whether they are school leavers or University Drama students. These young actors are able to reap the benefits of being a part of exciting professional theatre productions with a group of experienced actors as mentors.

Slip of the Tongue also use a small orchestra to complement their lively performances, calling on professional musicians and composers to design and create sounds perfect for the play.

"The company avoids over zealous interpreting of the plays. Instead the focus is on unfussy, direct story telling enlivened by live, acoustic music." (Dr Mark Houlahan of Waikato University in a letter of support for Slip of the Tongue, 2001).
